Advice for Self-Taught Designers
September 4, 2024 2024-09-04 13:47Advice for Self-Taught Designers
2 of the biggest things you’ll have to figure out if you’re going to succeed as a self-taught designer are:
1. how to build a network/circle of other designer colleagues
2. how to get (honest) feedback about your work so you can improve.

This basically applies to most jobs. Such as animation or copywriting,etc.
@chrisbenn
Super nice video! thanks! 🙂
But!
How would you get a job in the field you are trying to learn if you are still at that stage where you need beginner feedback?! 🙂
That's where I am "platoing" at the moment…
@aistips
Thanks for your great advice.
@TheBillaro
Can an online school, not a group, provide what a traditional school can?
Perhaps the face to face is missing but u can still network and get feedback.

I'm kind of a self taught designer – I studied Architecture then pivoted to doing freelance work in a niche within graphic design. I can confirm that not having access to feedback is one of the biggest obstacles for my growth.
@kacperszymczak7364
You can always find someone on one of online groups and criticize each other work, you will learn to do better design and to criticize 🙂
@Ddos2212
Just a note: I love the intro you use in your videos, but there is a part that I don't like. It starts from 0:20, that sound is kinda annoying (couldn't find a better word to describe it). All in all very awesome channel
@Awesomelink23
I'm doing design labs course online right now and they have a dope mentorship program where they give you feedback on projects/your work.
@silque1150
Why would I want "self-taught" advice from someone who received formal design training in school.
You will never know the true struggles and experience of self-teaching yourself something unless you actually self-teach yourself.
This advice isn't really that compelling either.
@siddiquemursal6821
Thanks Ran you're a great. Your videos greatly inspires me.
@facundogimenez1679
Before I dropped the design school, I was chatting with a teacher about charging 1k on projects internationally and she was like, "I only reach out to the neighborhood" is that really experience?
@user-yz4iy4kc6p
I got feedback on my design from people I consider mentor on instagram. Another great resource is Growthmentor.io
@SefatChowdhuryIsTheKing
I think reading books is the number one skill all good designers must possess!
@Rapidweblaunch
This is good advice. And way to stay clear of the education debate. 😉
@aleksandarcucukovic9710
That's why i advise young designers to work on 99Designs. I know contests are bad route, but you get feedback from real clients, plus if you are just getting started you can create a portfolio based on real projects and if you win, you get some money along the way.
@RareMade
Been self taught since 11 I’m 22 now. check my insta? @mykeaveli_
@nikhil_minz
Thanks for the tips Ran!
@rohitux
Thanks for this I was waiting for these types of videos since long ago
@annafilou
I think this is very valuable. Yes, you did not tell us how to solve the challenges but it’s really helpful to listen to someone describe them in detail. I’m not surprised to hear these things, but honestly they’re not the first things that come to mind. Your advice is always fresh, thoughtful, and helpful.
@Rotem-er9wd
Thanks a lot!
What is the best way in your opinion to learn design theory as a self taught?
@kacperwalter
A few days ago I asked you on instagram about if it was necessary to go to design school to become a good designer and here is the answer 😀
@abhishekkalia2702
You are the definition of an underrated YouTube channel
@Epicpig12
Thanks Ran!!
